About Pogo Energy
Pogo Energy has been running pay-as-you-go lights in Texas since 2017. That’s newer than some of the big names in prepaid, but they’ve built a straightforward operation: no credit check, no deposit, and same-day service on weekdays. PUCT license #10301.
If your lights are off or you’re moving and can’t pass a credit check, Pogo Energy will get you sorted. No exceptions, no credit pull, no long contract.
No Deposit, No Credit Check, Guaranteed
Pogo Energy is prepaid only. They do not run credit checks. They do not ask for one. Your score, your history, previous utility debt from another address, a past disconnection with a different company — none of that affects your eligibility. If you can put $30 to $50 toward a starting balance, you’re in.
That $30 to $50 is not a deposit and not a fee. It loads directly onto your account as your first balance and gets used as you consume power. You’re not losing that money — it pays for your lights as you use them. Read how pay-as-you-go lights work if you’re new to prepaid billing.
Same-Day Lights, Weekdays Until 3 PM
Pogo Energy offers same-day service Monday through Friday, with a cutoff at 3 PM Central Time. Sign up before 3 PM on a weekday and your lights can come on that same day. Most customers with a smart meter see power restored within a few hours of signing up.
The 3 PM cutoff is earlier than some prepaid competitors, and it’s Monday through Friday only — so weekends and evenings are out for same-day. If it’s Saturday or you’ve missed the cutoff, your lights will come on the next business day. Worth knowing before you start the process. If you need weekend same-day service, compare other no-deposit light companies to see what else is available.
What You’re Actually Paying
Being straight about cost: prepaid rates run higher than traditional fixed-rate plans. A home using 1,000 units per month on a traditional plan might pay $90 to $130. The same usage on prepaid typically runs $150 to $200. Over 12 months, that gap is roughly $600 to $900.
That difference is the price of guaranteed approval and no credit check. For someone in a crisis who needs lights today and has no other option, that premium is often worth paying. For someone who could qualify for a traditional plan with no deposit, it’s real money left behind. See how prepaid compares to traditional plans before you decide.
Check your plan for daily service fees. Some prepaid plans charge a flat fee each day — often $0.50 to $1.00 — regardless of usage. That’s $15 to $30 per month before you use any power. A plan with a slightly higher per-unit rate but no daily fee can actually cost less. Read the details.
How Billing Works
Pogo Energy bills daily. Each day, they calculate what you used and subtract it from your balance. You get notified when your balance drops low, so you have time to reload before you hit zero.
Zero balance means your lights go off. There’s no grace period like a traditional monthly bill. The upside: when you reload, power usually restores fast — no phone call, no appointment, no reconnection fee. Reloading is easier than dealing with a traditional company after a missed payment.
You can reload online, by phone at 1-844-227-7646, or through their app.
Who Pogo Energy Is Right For
Pogo Energy makes sense if you need lights today or this week and can’t pass a credit check, if you’re moving to a new place and need service fast, or if you want service without a contract or commitment. No early termination fee. Stop adding money whenever you’re done.
It also works as a bridge. Use prepaid for 6 to 12 months, build a payment track record, then switch to a traditional plan at lower rates. The path from prepaid to traditional is real and it saves money.
Who Should Look Elsewhere First
If there’s a switch hold on your address, prepaid won’t clear it. You’d need to resolve that with your utility company before any light company can turn service on.
If you receive SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or TANF, Texas law may let you waive a deposit on a traditional plan entirely. Same if you’re 65 or older. In those cases, you might get a traditional plan at lower rates without needing prepaid at all.
And if you’re not sure whether you’d qualify for a no-deposit traditional plan, it’s worth a quick check first. Many people who assume they need prepaid find a traditional option. We check multiple light companies at once to see if any will approve you at $0 deposit. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
Pogo Energy is a solid guaranteed option. But saving $600 to $900 a year is worth checking before you commit to prepaid rates. Read our full Pogo Energy review for a deeper look at rates, customer feedback, and plan details.

What you should know
The honest truth about pay-as-you-go
- It costs more. Pay-as-you-go rates run about $50-60 higher per month than traditional plans. That's the trade-off for no deposit.
- Balance hits $0, lights go off. No grace period. Set up those text alerts and top off before you run out.
- Won't clear a switch hold. If someone owes money at your address, pay-as-you-go can't get around that. You'd need to clear it with the utility first.
- No hidden fees here. But always double-check rates with the light company before you sign. Prices change.
