Emergency Help With Your Light Bill Before Lights Get Cut Off

Your lights aren't off yet. Here's how to get emergency light bill help in Texas today — programs, phone numbers, and what to say.

Start Here: What You’re Actually Working With

A disconnection notice in Texas isn’t immediate. Your light company is required to give you at least 10 days’ notice before your lights get cut off. If you got that notice today, you have a real window to act. If you’re closer to the cutoff date, that window is smaller, but it’s not gone.

What you need right now is cash, a pledge, or a payment arrangement on record before that date hits. This post walks you through each path, fastest first.

Call Your Light Company First, Before Anything Else

Before you contact any assistance program, call your light company directly. Ask two things:

  1. What’s my exact disconnection date?
  2. Can I get a payment extension or arrangement?

Most light companies in Texas will give you a payment arrangement if you haven’t defaulted on one in the last 12 months. You may only need to pay a portion of the past-due balance today to push the cutoff date back. That buys you time to get help.

If you have a medical condition that depends on electricity, a CPAP, oxygen concentrator, dialysis machine, or anything similar, tell the representative that right now. Texas law requires your light company to give you additional time and protections if someone in the household has a life-threatening condition. You’ll need a signed doctor’s statement, but the protection is real.

Get the extension in writing, or at minimum get the rep’s name and a confirmation number.

CEAP: The Fastest Texas Program for Emergency Light Bill Help

The Community Services Block Grant Energy Assistance Program, called CEAP, is the Texas-specific emergency light bill help program administered through local community action agencies. It can pay your light company directly, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours once approved.

To find your local CEAP agency, go to the Texas Health and Human Services website or call 2-1-1. That’s it. Dial 2-1-1 from any phone, tell them your ZIP code, and ask for emergency energy assistance. The 2-1-1 operator will connect you to the right local office.

What you’ll need to bring or have ready:

  • A photo ID
  • Proof of income for all adults in the household (a recent pay stub, benefit award letter, or employer statement)
  • Your most recent light bill showing the account number and your name
  • Proof of address if your ID doesn’t match your current home

Income limits apply. For a household of one, you generally need to be at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, that’s roughly $46,800 a year or less as of 2024. If you’re close to the line, apply anyway and let the caseworker make the call.

LIHEAP: The Federal Layer on Top

LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is the federal version of energy bill help. In Texas, it runs through the same local agencies as CEAP, so when you call 2-1-1, you may be applying to both at once. The funding cycles are separate, so one may have money when the other doesn’t.

LIHEAP also has a crisis component specifically for households facing disconnection. If your lights are days away from being cut off, say that clearly when you call. Crisis funds move faster than regular assistance.

Local Nonprofits and Churches: No Income Limits, Faster Cash

If you’re over the income limit for CEAP or LIHEAP, or if you need help faster than those programs can process, local nonprofits and churches are the next call. The St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities all run emergency utility assistance programs. Income limits are either lower or nonexistent, and many can issue a pledge to your light company within the same day.

Call the organization closest to you and ask specifically for utility assistance. Have your light bill and ID ready. Some offices walk in, some appointment-only. Ask when you call.

If the Help Doesn’t Come in Time: The Prepaid Switch

Here’s the honest reality. Sometimes the assistance doesn’t process before the cutoff date. Sometimes you don’t qualify. If your lights get cut off and you’re trying to figure out how to get the lights back on without paying a big deposit, prepaid lights are the fastest path.

Prepaid light companies in Texas don’t run a credit check and don’t require a deposit. You load money onto the account, and your lights come on. Some prepaid light companies offer same-day lights, meaning you can have power back the same day you sign up if you do it before the noon cutoff window.

The tradeoff is real: prepaid lights cost more per kilowatt-hour than postpaid plans. If you’re watching every dollar, that matters. But if the choice is a dark house tonight or paying a slightly higher rate to keep the lights on while you stabilize, prepaid is worth knowing about.

No deposit lights are a separate option. Some postpaid light companies will waive the deposit if you meet certain criteria. That path takes a little longer to set up than prepaid but can be cheaper month to month.

The 30-Minute Checklist

If you just found this page and your cutoff date is close, here’s the order of operations:

  1. Call your light company. Ask for an extension. Get the date moved if you can.
  2. Dial 2-1-1. Ask for emergency energy assistance in your ZIP code.
  3. Call a local nonprofit if 2-1-1 has a wait or can’t help fast enough.
  4. If the lights get cut off anyway, look into prepaid or no deposit lights to get the lights back on today.

You don’t have to pick just one. You can call your light company and 2-1-1 on the same day. Stack the options. Keep the lights on.
