How to Calculate the Cost of kWh on Your Light Bill
Learn how to calculate the cost of kWh on your light bill, find out what's eating your lights, and stop overpaying every month in Texas.
Your light bill is high because something in your house is running hard, and the math to figure out exactly what it is takes about five minutes.
This is not complicated. You do not need a degree or a special app. You need the rate on your light bill, a number off the appliance, and basic multiplication. That’s it.
What a kWh Actually Is
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is what your light company charges you for. It measures how much power something uses over one hour.
Here’s the simple version: one kilowatt equals 1,000 watts. So if you run a 1,000-watt appliance for one hour, that’s 1 kWh. Run it for two hours, that’s 2 kWh. Your light company charges you a rate, usually somewhere between $0.09 and $0.16 per kWh in Texas, and multiplies it by every kWh you use all month.
That’s your light bill.
How to Find Your Rate Per kWh
Before you calculate anything, you need your actual rate. Here’s where to find it:
On your paper bill: Look for a line that says “energy charge” or “rate per kWh.” It’s usually listed as a cents-per-kWh number, like 11.2¢ or $0.112.
On a prepaid account: Log into your account portal or text your light company’s balance number. Most prepaid light companies in Texas show your daily usage and rate in the app.
If you don’t have a bill yet: The average Texas residential rate runs around $0.12 to $0.14 per kWh as of 2024, depending on your plan and how much you use. Use $0.13 as a working estimate until you have your actual number.
The Formula: How to Calculate the Cost of kWh
Here’s the formula, plain and simple:
(Watts ÷ 1,000) × Hours Used × Your Rate = Cost
Let’s walk through it once with a real example.
Say your window AC unit is 1,440 watts. You run it 8 hours a day. Your rate is $0.13 per kWh.
- 1,440 ÷ 1,000 = 1.44 kW
- 1.44 × 8 hours = 11.52 kWh per day
- 11.52 × $0.13 = $1.50 per day
- $1.50 × 30 days = $45 a month just for that one AC unit
That’s before your fridge, your water heater, your TV, your phone chargers, or anything else.
Now you can see why the bill gets where it gets.
How to Monitor Electricity Usage in Your Home
You don’t need a smart meter or a special device to do this. Here’s how to track what’s eating your lights without spending money:
Check the wattage label. Every appliance has a wattage rating on the back, the bottom, or inside the door. Write them down on a piece of paper.
Estimate daily hours. Think about how long each appliance actually runs in a day. Your fridge runs roughly 8 hours out of 24 even though it’s always plugged in, because the compressor cycles on and off. Your space heater might run 6 hours on a cold night. Be honest with your estimates.
Multiply it out. Use the formula above for each appliance. Add the daily costs together and multiply by 30. That’s your estimated monthly total.
Use a free kWh cost calculator. The U.S. Department of Energy has a free appliance energy calculator at energy.gov. You plug in the wattage, daily hours, and your rate per kWh, and it spits out the monthly cost. No account required.
Watch your smart meter if you have one. Texas is fully ERCOT-connected, and most Oncor, CenterPoint, and AEP customers have smart meters. You can log into your TDU’s website and pull 15-minute interval data to see exactly when your usage spikes.
The Appliances That Usually Win
Before you run the numbers on your phone charger, know where the real weight is. These are the appliances that typically make up 60 to 80 percent of a Texas light bill:
- Central AC or window units. In Texas summers, this is almost always the top driver.
- Electric water heater. Running 3 to 5 hours a day, it adds up fast.
- Electric dryer. One load uses roughly 3 to 4 kWh. Do the math on how many loads you run a week.
- Refrigerator. Older models can run 150 watts or more. Newer ones are closer to 100.
- Space heaters. Most run 1,500 watts. Running one overnight is not cheap.
Your lights and TV? Those are not your problem. Your problem is climate control and hot water.
How This Connects to Your Light Plan
If you’re on pay-as-you-go lights, this math matters even more. Prepaid plans charge you daily based on your actual usage. When you know your kWh cost and you can see your usage in the app, you know exactly why your balance dropped $4 yesterday instead of $2. That’s not a glitch, that’s your AC.
If you’re looking at no deposit lights options and comparing plans, the rate per kWh is the number you’re shopping. A plan at $0.10 per kWh versus $0.14 per kWh on the same usage is a real difference, roughly $40 a month on a 1,000 kWh household. Run the formula before you sign anything.
One More Thing Worth Knowing
Your light company charges you per kWh, but your bill also includes delivery charges from the TDU (the poles-and-wires company) and sometimes a base fee. Those are fixed and you can’t shop them. What you can shop is the energy rate. The formula above only covers the energy portion, but that’s the part you have the most control over.
