Moving With Bad Credit and Need Lights? Here's Your Plan
Moving to a new address with bad credit and need lights fast? Here's exactly how to get the lights on same day, no deposit required.
What You Need to Do in the Next 30 Minutes
Before you do anything else, pull out two things: a photo ID and your new address. That’s the baseline for almost every no deposit lights option in Texas. You don’t need a credit score printout. You don’t need your old light bill. You need your ID and the address, and you can have the lights on before the day is over.
Call Payless Power at 1-800-427-5465 or go online and sign up for their prepaid plan. There’s no credit check and no deposit. You load a starting balance, usually around $40 to $75 depending on your meter, and the lights come on same day in most cases. That’s the fastest path. It’s not fancy, but it works, and working fast is exactly what you need when you’re moving.
If you’d rather go a different route first, keep reading. There are a few options worth knowing about, and the right one depends on how much you can put up front and whether you want a monthly bill or pay-as-you-go lights.
Why Moving With Bad Credit Makes the Light Bill Harder
Most postpaid light companies in Texas run your credit when you apply. If your score is low, they quote you a deposit, sometimes $200, sometimes $300, sometimes more. That deposit is sitting cash they hold for months. When you’re already covering a moving truck, a new place, and first month’s rent, that deposit can be the thing that breaks the budget.
Some light companies will also flat-out deny you if your credit is below a certain threshold. That’s not a rumor, it’s standard practice. The Texas PUC allows it. So the market is set up in a way that makes moving harder the less money you have, which is backwards, but it’s the reality.
The good news is there’s a whole category of light companies that don’t use credit to decide if you can have lights. They exist specifically for this situation.
Your Two Real Options for Move-In Lights No Deposit
Option 1: Pay-As-You-Go Lights
Prepaid lights are the most direct no credit check moving lights option in Texas. You sign up, you load a balance, the lights come on. No deposit. No credit check. No contract.
The tradeoff is you’re managing your balance. If it hits zero, the lights go out. Most prepaid light companies send you text alerts when your balance gets low, so you have time to reload. But if you’re juggling a lot during a move, that’s one more thing to track.
What you’ll pay to start: typically $40 to $75 to activate and cover your first few days. After that you load money as you go, same as a prepaid phone.
Companies to look at: Payless Power, GriddyGo, Prepaid Electricity. Call before applying so you can confirm same-day availability at your specific address.
Option 2: Postpaid No Deposit Lights
A few postpaid light companies offer no deposit lights based on criteria other than your credit score. Some use income verification instead of a credit check. Others waive the deposit if you set up autopay or sign up through a specific plan.
The tradeoff here is you’re back on a monthly bill cycle. You get a bill at the end of the month and pay it by the due date. There’s no daily balance to watch. But the application process takes a little longer and some of these options aren’t available same day.
If you need lights today, start with prepaid. If you have a day or two and prefer a monthly bill, look into Snap! by Constellation and similar postpaid options built for credit-challenged customers.
What to Have Ready When You Apply
Regardless of which direction you go, have these ready before you call or click:
- Your Texas address, including the unit number if applicable
- A government-issued photo ID
- Your Social Security number or ITIN (for prepaid this is usually just for identity verification, not a credit pull)
- A debit card or prepaid card to fund your starting balance
- Your move-in date
That’s it. You don’t need to explain your credit history. You don’t need a reference from your last light company. You just need to be able to confirm who you are and where you’re moving.
One Thing to Watch Out For
Some light companies advertise no deposit lights but still run a credit check and then offer a conditional approval with a smaller deposit. That’s not the same as no deposit. Read the confirmation screen before you finalize anything. If a deposit amount shows up anywhere in the signup flow, you’re not on a true no deposit plan.
Legit no deposit lights through a prepaid plan will never ask you for a deposit. They’ll ask for a starting balance, which you get the full value of as usage credit. That’s a different thing.
The Bottom Line
Moving with bad credit is hard enough without the light company making it harder. The options above exist so you don’t have to choose between keeping a deposit in someone else’s pocket and keeping the lights on at your new address. Start with the 30-minute move described at the top of this post, and adjust from there once you’re settled.
