No Deposit Lights in San Antonio: How to Get Around CPS
Need no deposit lights in San Antonio? CPS Energy requires deposits for bad credit. Here's the exact workaround — same-day lights, no credit check.

What CPS Energy Does With Your Credit
CPS Energy is San Antonio’s monopoly utility. You can’t shop around for a different CPS the way you can in Dallas or Houston. If you live inside the CPS service area, that’s the only wire coming into your home.
What that means practically: CPS runs your credit when you apply for a new account. If your score is below their threshold, or if you have an unpaid balance from a past CPS account, they’ll hit you with a deposit. CPS doesn’t use a flat fee — their own rules set the deposit at the greater of two times the monthly bill for your address or the current average monthly bill for your service class. For most San Antonio homes, that works out to a few hundred dollars. They’ll tell you it’s refundable after 12 months of on-time payments. That doesn’t help you today.
Here’s the part CPS won’t lead with: there is a legal workaround, and it works the same day.
The CPS Energy Deposit Alternative That Works
Texas deregulated most of its electricity market, but not CPS. San Antonio sits in a regulated territory. That means you cannot pick a retail light company the way Houston residents can.
But here’s what you can do. CPS Energy is the only company that can put your name on a meter inside its service area — no light company, prepaid or postpaid, can legally serve you there instead. More importantly, there are two paths available to you right now:
Path 1: Apply directly with CPS and fight the deposit.
CPS Energy sets its own deposit policy — as a city-owned utility, it isn’t bound by the state rules that apply to deregulated light companies — and it may waive or reduce a deposit in cases like these:
- A doctor’s letter that someone in the home depends on life-support equipment
- Being 65+ with no past-due CPS balance
- A co-signer with good CPS history
Call CPS at 210-353-2222 and ask exactly what they’ll accept before you gather documents. This won’t get you completely off the hook for a credit check, but it can get the deposit waived same day if the rep processes it correctly.
Path 2: Get pay-as-you-go lights at a different address.
This is the faster move for most people who can use it — but it only works outside CPS’s service area, since CPS is the only company allowed to put your name on a meter inside its territory. If a move is realistic, you put money on your account upfront, typically $40 to $75 to start, and that balance is your power. No deposit held. No credit check run. Lights on the same day in most cases if you enroll before 2 p.m. on a weekday.
The tradeoff is honest: prepaid lights cost slightly more per kilowatt-hour than a standard CPS postpaid rate. You’re paying a small premium to skip the deposit and the credit check. For most people dealing with a $300 deposit demand, that premium pays for itself in the first few months.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
Whether you go the direct CPS route or the pay-as-you-go lights route, have these ready:
- Your service address, including apartment number if applicable
- Your move-in date or the date your lights got cut off
- A government-issued ID
- Your Social Security number or ITIN
- $40 to $75 if you’re going prepaid, or the deposit amount if you’re applying direct with CPS
For same-day lights through a prepaid option, you typically enroll online or by phone. The enrollment takes about 10 minutes. If your address is already metered and active in the system, lights usually come on within a few hours.
If Your Lights Got Cut Off for Non-Payment
This is a different situation than a new account. If CPS cut your lights off for non-payment, they will require you to pay the past-due balance plus a reconnect fee plus a new deposit before they restore service. That total can easily hit $500 or more.
If that’s where you are, the prepaid path above still applies to a new address. But if you’re staying in the same address and owe CPS a past-due balance, you’ll need to deal with that balance to get back on with CPS directly.
Options in that case:
- CPS offers a deferred payment plan. Call 210-353-2222 and ask specifically for the payment arrangement program.
- The City of San Antonio runs the Utility Assistance Program through the Department of Human Services. The number is 210-207-8198. They can sometimes pay directly to CPS on your behalf if you qualify based on income.
- If anyone in the home depends on electric medical equipment, mention that when you call. Texas rules can delay a cutoff for a documented medical need — not simply because a child or a senior lives there.
The Bottom Line for San Antonio
You cannot shop light companies in San Antonio the way Houston residents can. CPS has the territory. But you are not locked into their deposit requirements with no options. Same-day lights through a no credit check prepaid company is a real path, and it works today. The deposit alternative through CPS’s own waiver program is real too if you qualify.
Know which situation you’re in, have your documents ready, and make the call in the next 30 minutes. The lights can be on before the day is done.
