TXU Pay Online: What to Do When You Can't Cover the Bill
Can't pay your TXU light bill? Here's exactly how to pay online, set up a payment arrangement, and get bill help before your lights get cut off.
If your TXU bill is due today and the money isn’t there, the first thing you do is log into MyAccount at txu.com and check whether a payment arrangement is already available to you. Don’t call yet. Don’t panic yet. Check the account first, because TXU sometimes shows you a payment plan option right there on the screen without you having to ask.
This post walks you through every step: how to pay online, how to request more time, where to get outside help with your light bill, and what to do if none of it works in time.
How to Pay Your TXU Bill Online
Go to txu.com and click “Sign In” in the top right corner. If you don’t have an account set up, you’ll need your TXU account number from any past bill and the last four digits of your Social Security number to register. It takes about three minutes.
Once you’re in, the payment screen accepts:
- Debit or credit cards
- Checking or savings account (bank draft)
- PayPal and Venmo in some cases
Payments made before 6 p.m. Central time typically post the same day. That matters if you’re close to a cut-off date.
If you don’t have internet access right now, TXU’s automated phone pay line is 1-800-818-6132. Have your account number ready. You can also pay in person at any Walmart MoneyCenter or ACE Cash Express location using a barcode TXU can text or email you, though those payments can take up to 24 hours to post.
What a TXU Payment Arrangement Actually Gives You
A payment arrangement through TXU splits what you owe into smaller amounts spread over two to six months. It doesn’t forgive any of the balance. It just keeps your lights on while you pay it down.
Here’s how to request one:
- Log into MyAccount at txu.com.
- Click “Billing & Payments,” then “Payment Arrangement.”
- If TXU shows you options, pick the one with the lowest down payment you can actually cover today.
- Confirm it. Screenshot or print the confirmation.
If the online tool doesn’t show you an arrangement option, call TXU customer service at 1-800-818-6132 and say: “I need to set up a payment arrangement before my service is interrupted.” Ask specifically what the minimum down payment is and what date each installment is due. Write it all down.
A few things to know going in. TXU can deny a payment arrangement if you’ve defaulted on one in the past 12 months. And once you’re on an arrangement, a missed installment is grounds for disconnection — but TXU still has to send a written disconnection notice first, so watch your mail and email and act the day it shows up. So only agree to amounts you’re confident you can hit.
TXU Bill Help: Outside Assistance Programs
If the balance is too far gone for a payment arrangement to fix, there are programs that can pay part or all of it directly to TXU on your behalf.
CEAP (Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program). LITE-UP Texas, the old state discount, ended August 31, 2016 when its funding ran out — don’t waste time chasing it. The state program that took its place is CEAP, funded by LIHEAP and run through your local community action agency. Call 211 or your local agency to apply. Income limits apply.
LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program). Federally funded. Administered locally. Find your nearest office at benefits.gov or call 211. LIHEAP can pay past-due amounts directly to TXU to prevent cut-off. The funds run out seasonally, so apply as soon as you know you need it.
Local utility assistance funds. Call 211 and tell them your lights are about to get cut off. The 211 operator can connect you to local emergency funds, church-based assistance, and nonprofit programs that most people never find on their own. This is the single most underused resource in Texas for light bill emergencies.
TXU Energy Aid. TXU runs its own charitable assistance program, funded through customer donations. You apply through a local social services agency, not directly through TXU. The same 211 call can get you pointed toward an agency that handles TXU Energy Aid applications.
If Your Lights Already Got Cut Off
If your lights got cut off by TXU, you have two paths.
The first path is paying the past-due balance plus the disconnect/reconnect fee, which comes from your TDU (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP, TNMP) and gets passed through on your TXU bill. TXU can’t waive it, and the amount depends on your utility — ask for the exact total before you pay. Once payment posts, restoration usually happens within 24 hours, sometimes same day.
The second path is switching to a different light company — as long as there’s no switch-hold on your meter. If you took a deferred payment plan, TXU can place a switch-hold that blocks you from buying electricity from anyone else until that deferred balance is paid off. If TXU is asking for a large deposit to restore your account and you can’t cover it, a no deposit lights option on a prepaid plan can get your lights back on faster, sometimes the same day, without a credit check and without a deposit.
That tradeoff is real. Pay-as-you-go lights cost more per kilowatt hour than a standard contract plan. But if the choice is between lights today and no lights while you scrape together a deposit, same-day lights wins.
The Bottom Line
Check your TXU MyAccount first. Request a payment arrangement online before you call. Call 211 if the balance needs outside help. And if TXU isn’t going to work for you right now, know that switching to a no deposit lights plan on a prepaid meter is a real option, not a last resort to be ashamed of.
Your lights matter. Work every option until they’re on.
