When's the Cutoff for Same-Day Lights?

This is the most important thing to know. Miss the cutoff and you're waiting until tomorrow.

Weekdays (Monday-Friday)

2-3 PM: Most traditional light companies stop accepting same-day orders
6 PM: Prepaid companies (Payless Power, TXU, Frontier, Gexa, 4Change) usually accept orders this late

Order before 2 PM to have the most options. After that, you're limited to prepaid plans.

Weekends & Holidays

Most utilities don't process connections on weekends or holidays. You can sign up, but your lights won't come on until the next business day (usually Monday morning).

Do I have a smart meter?

About 90% of Texas homes have smart meters. If you do, the utility can flip your switch remotely without sending a truck. That's how same-day works.

Don't know? Enter your ZIP above and we'll tell you when you see your plans.

What You Need to Get Lights Today

Have these ready before you start. Makes the whole thing take 5 minutes instead of 20.

Service Address

The exact address where you need lights. Not a PO Box. Has to match your ID or lease.

Valid Photo ID

Texas driver license or state ID. Some companies accept out-of-state IDs if you're new to Texas.

Payment Method

Debit card or bank account. For prepaid, you'll pay $40-75 to start. Traditional plans charge a deposit if required.

Don't have all of this? You can still start the process. Some companies are flexible.

What Happens After You Sign Up

Real timeline. No guessing.

1

You pick a plan

~5 min

Enter your info, pick prepaid or traditional, pay your startup amount. The company sends your order to the utility.

2

You get confirmation

~10 min

Email and text with your account number and next steps. This means the utility got your order.

3

Utility processes the order

1-3 hours

The utility checks your meter, confirms the switch is ready, and queues you up. This is the waiting part.

Lights come on

Usually 2-4 hours total

The utility flips your switch remotely. No truck, no appointment. You'll know when your lights turn on.

Times vary by utility. Oncor (Dallas/Fort Worth) is usually fastest. CenterPoint (Houston) can take up to 4 hours.
