What If 4Change Energy Requires a Deposit?
If 4Change Energy requires a deposit based on your credit, we don't stop there. We check 5-6 other light companies to find one that'll approve you with $0 deposit. Every company has different thresholds - one might say yes even if 4Change Energy said no.
Can't promise you'll find a $0 deposit option, but many people do. And if none of the traditional companies work? You always have pay-as-you-go - guaranteed approval, no deposit, lights on today.
About 4Change Energy
4Change Energy has been operating in the Texas deregulated market since 2012. PUCT-licensed (#10239), they serve both traditional post-paid plans and pay-as-you-go plans. The company’s tagline is “lights that give back,” and they donate a portion of revenue to charitable causes, which sets them apart from most light companies in Texas.
That mission gives some people a reason to choose them. But the more important question for most people landing here is simpler: can you get your lights on through 4Change Energy without paying a deposit?
Credit Check Required. Here’s What That Means for You.
4Change Energy runs a credit check when you apply for a traditional plan. That’s standard for every post-paid light company in Texas. The system is designed that way, not because of anything you did. If your credit comes back below their threshold, they’ll quote you a deposit before your lights can go on.
What that deposit looks like depends on your credit profile and the plan you pick. Based on their deposit structure, you could be looking at $50 on the low end, up to $150 in more difficult cases. If you’ve been turned down elsewhere or quoted a big deposit, that range may not sound much different. But the number matters because it determines whether you can realistically get started today.
That’s where we come in. When a light company requires a deposit, we check with multiple other companies at once to see if any of them will approve you at $0 deposit. Every company sets their own credit thresholds, and those thresholds vary. One company might turn you down at your score, another might approve you at the same number with no deposit at all. See how deposits actually work in Texas so you know what you’re dealing with before you start.
If You Do Need to Start on Pay-As-You-Go
If the traditional route doesn’t work out, 4Change Energy offers pay-as-you-go service too. No credit check required on the prepaid side. You’re looking at $50 to $150 to start, and that money goes directly toward your usage. It’s not a fee, not a deposit. You’re prepaying for power, and you spend it down as your lights run.
How pay-as-you-go lights work is worth reading if this is your first time on a prepaid plan. The billing model is different from traditional: you add money when you need to, and your lights stay on as long as your balance is above zero.
Same-day service is available Monday through Saturday with a 6 PM CT cutoff. Sign up before that window closes and most customers with a smart meter get power the same day. Compare pay-as-you-go and traditional plans to decide which direction makes more sense for your situation before you commit.
The Charitable Giving Angle
4Change Energy is one of the few light companies in Texas that ties service to a giving back model. A portion of what you pay goes to nonprofits. They offer customers a choice in which causes receive the donations. For some people, that’s meaningful. It doesn’t change your rate or your service, but if you’d rather your light bill contribute to something useful, it’s a real differentiator.
What it’s not: a reason to ignore rates. The charitable angle is a nice-to-have, not a discount. Compare actual plan costs before you sign up.
The 60-Day Satisfaction Guarantee
4Change Energy backs their service with a 60-day satisfaction guarantee. If you sign up and decide the plan isn’t right for you within the first 60 days, you can leave without paying an early termination fee. That’s a meaningful protection on fixed-rate contracts, where most companies lock you in.
If you’re trying a traditional plan for the first time after being on pay-as-you-go, that guarantee gives you room to back out if something doesn’t work. More context on making that transition is in our path to traditional plans guide.
Who 4Change Energy Is Right For
4Change Energy fits people who can qualify for a traditional plan with little or no deposit and want to stay with a light company that operates with a community-focused mission. If their credit check comes back clean for you, you get competitive rates, a satisfaction guarantee, and the charitable giving program.
It’s also a reasonable option for pay-as-you-go customers who want a single company for both options as their credit picture improves over time.
Who Should Look Elsewhere First
If you have a switch hold on your address, neither the traditional nor prepaid path through 4Change Energy will clear it. That’s an ERCOT issue, not a light company issue, and it needs to be resolved separately first.
If your main concern is the absolute lowest cost pay-as-you-go option, 4Change Energy’s customer base is smaller than companies like Payless Power that have specialized in prepaid for 20 years. Rates and support infrastructure can reflect that difference.
And if you’re not sure whether you’d qualify for a $0 deposit traditional plan anywhere, it’s worth running that check before committing to prepaid rates. Prepaid costs roughly $600 to $900 more per year than a comparable traditional plan. That’s real money. What you should know
The honest truth about pay-as-you-go
- It costs more. Pay-as-you-go rates run about $50-60 higher per month than traditional plans. That's the trade-off for no deposit.
- Balance hits $0, lights go off. No grace period. Set up those text alerts and top off before you run out.
- Won't clear a switch hold. If someone owes money at your address, pay-as-you-go can't get around that. You'd need to clear it with the utility first.
- No hidden fees here. But always double-check rates with the light company before you sign. Prices change.
